The mission of Safe Passages is to advocate for children, youth, and families with a special emphasis on vulnerable populations. Safe Passages envisions a community where all young people have the opportunity to realize their full potential. Safe Passages is based on the premises that access to educational opportunity, health services, and family support should not be dictated by race or socio-economic status, and that healthy and supported young people are better prepared to learn and succeed. 

The Life Skills Coach is a critical part of the Safe Passages and Oakland’s Department of Violence Prevention funded life coaching training program to serve 32 Oakland youth that have been impacted by community violence. This program provides case management, job training, diversion programming, education plans and support, legal services, mentoring, mental health support, and service-learning opportunities.

The Life Skills Coach serves as a case manager and coordinates services to develop, implement, and track progress on the Life and Career Roadmap for Oakland youth ages 14-18. This position reports to the Life Coaching Program Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Outreach to eligible youth and families.
  • Conduct youth assessments.
  • Prepare and implement Life and Career Roadmap with youth.
  • Supervise youth in their education placements and internships.
  • Prepare and maintain data and case records.
  • Conduct, arrange, or broker the necessary services and supports for each student in accordance with their Life and Career Roadmap goals.
  • Coordinate the involvement of staff, family, and caregivers, supervisors, academic case managers, lawyer, school staff, and community supports.
  • Consult with Life Coaching team to ensure continuity and success of age-appropriate services for youth as they progress towards completion of Life and Career Roadmap goals.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Demonstrated record of success providing case management to diverse and/or highly disengaged high school aged youth in an urban setting; 3 years minimum strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success coordinating with diverse agencies and service providers to ensure youth’s success.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a human services field plus three years of related work experience in providing casework services to youth and families;
  • Knowledge of and practice with youth development principles and best practices in serving highly disengaged youth;
  • Demonstrated experience working on a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Experience with youth workforce development programming preferred;
  • Cultural competency required; Spanish speaking desired.

 

Commitment & Compensation

Employment Classification:  This is a full time, exempt position

 Work Schedule:   40 hours per week; some evenings and weekends required (based on needs of youth and families)

 Compensation:  

  • Salary is highly competitive and based on experience. Range salary is $55,000 - $60,000.
